MEMBERS EVENTS - 2008/9 RESULTS & SHERIDAN'S REPORTS
Sheridan's Report - 14th April 2009
Well who would have believed that the conditions would still be so good for the last week of the season. It was hot and sunny most of the week, the pistes were not crowded at all. Lots of great spring snow skiing if you got the timing right.
The Presidents party went well on Tuesday 7 April around 85 people attended mostly locals from Wengen and some DHO members. Lotti and Rosemary (Jagerstubli restaurant) came all the way from Grindlewald it was great to see them both.
Thanks go to Eden Davies, Lizzie Davis, Rita Swindells and Christina Phillips who provided some great canapes for the occasion. Also thanks to Jeremy Howard and Terry Turner who acted as barmen for the evening.

On Wednesday we ran the Cova cup - this time it was a very different race many were relieved that they did not have to do any Curling!! It was a quiz race where teams of up to four had to ski around the area to find the answers to the questions set. Fun was had by all and we had sixteen teams entered. Sina invited the Sheffield Sharks who had a hundred members staying at the Falken Hotel to join in too. The winning team was team Graceless Residence (DHO), second was team White Boys (Sheffield Sharks) and third was team Fear Hounds (Sheffield Sharks). We also did some awards for the best poems the winning team were team Wells of Holy Spring Eternal (DHO), second were team Caprice (DHO) and third team Ice Patrol (Sheffield Sharks). The prize giving was held at the Falken as usual. Sina provided some great prizes and drinks for all in the afternoon.
Some of the Ski area is still open until 19 April, sadly hotels and restaurants are all now beginning to close and Wengen is very very quiet.
Christian Wells broke his leg badly only a couple of days before he was due to drive home. He is in Interlaken Hosptial and we wish him a speedy recovery.
I hope you all have a great summer and see you all on the slopes next winter season.
Sheridan's Report - 4th April 2009
Well finally the sun came out, and after a foggy and cloudy day on Monday the sun shone for the rest of the week. Tempreatures got up to plus 11 down in the village, more and more flowers were coming out as the snow melted in the village.
The best skiing is before 2pm this week however many stayed out until the end of the day. There were a few sunburned faces as some members forgot to put strong enough suncream on. The slopes were quite empty for the first week of the Easter holidays which was great no queueing. The Odling cup race was run on Thursday up on the Lauberhorn race course both adults and coggins used the same course. Despite warm weather lower down there was a bitter wind up on the Lauberhorn this did slow down one or two racers in the gusts of strong wind.
The winner of the Odling cup was Charlie Tritton, in second place was Sally Ireland and in third place was Lizzie Davis. Sadly the Railway cup was postponed until next season due to lack of numbers. Next week we have the Cova cup race to look forward to and the Presidents party.

Sheridan's Report - 29th March 2009
Well just when we thought spring was here and the sun would shine the weather suprised us again. The poor flowers were starting to come out and they got covered in snow. We saw a bit of sunshine on Mother's day then it started snowing again on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Then finally the sun came out on Thursday after a cloudy start.
We had so much snow the Odling cup race was cancelled on Wednesday and the Railway cup on Thursday. For the powder hounds amongst us it was great, more fresh tracks were made. The highlight of the week was on Sunday 29 March the DHO had 20 members racing in the Lauberhorn Donators race which was held beside the Bumps lift due to snow and poor visibility. (79 were entered in the race altogether).

Eight of those DHO racers won medals for coming 2nd or 3rd in their age catergories. The race was followed by lunch and prize giving at the Mannlichen restaurant who had laid on a Jazz band.

The Odling cup has been rescheduled for Thursday 2 April and the Railway cup on Friday 3 April. Bob and Rachel are busy with the Coggins and Eagles as the Easter holidays start. Next week looks a bit more promising with some sun forecast for the beginning of the week.
Sheridan's Report - 22nd March 2009
A much quieter week in Wengen with quite a few DHO members around still. The weather was glorious and warm at the beginning of the week. It made it a bit slushy in the afternoons, however everyone enjoyed the sunshine and a few people got a bit sunburnt. The tempreatures changed dramatically during the latter part of the week but the sun continued to shine. Extra clothing was needed to keep warm after being used to it getting up to plus 11 in the day it dropped to minus 8 in the day.
No races this week but next week is looking busy on that front. The Odling cup is on Wendesday 25 and the Railway cup has moved to the Thursday 26 March to enable the new Director of the Railways Urs Kessler to attend. The race will be a little different from previous years we will all meet at Kleine Scheidegg at 1.30 pm ready to head up to the Lauberhorn start hut to race in pairs down a GS course ending up at Kleine Scheidegg for prize giving around 3pm. There is also the Lauberhorn sponsors race on Sunday 29 March.
Sheridan's Report - 18th March 2009
Sunday 8 March started off with a lovely sunny day then the clouds returned carrying snow. Lots of DHO members were out and we had the biggest numbers so far this season at the drinks party 90 people. It is so good that the new club room is being well used. The highlight of the week was the DHO's sucess in the Amateur Inter-Club races held in Murren on Saturday and Sunday 14 and 15 March. Liz Moore organised for three half days of race training during the latter part of the week which I am sure contributed to the teams sucess. Please see below for more details on our sucess.
You will be pleased to hear that Liz Moore organised five teams for the 2nd Amateur Inter-Club Championship races in Murren last weekend 14/15 March. This was run by the Kandahar Club for the second year.. Next year the race will be held in Cortina hosted by the Diciotto Ski Club and the year after the DHO will host it in Wengen.

Sheridan's Report - 9th March 2009
The week started off with some sun and cloud on Sunday then it started snowing again on Monday. We had snow on Tuesday and then a sunny day on Wednesday.
Record numbers came to the drinks party on Tuesday evening - 85 people; just as well we have our lovely new room. I dont think they would all have fitted in the Curling club hut!! Sadly it snowed all day on Thursday for the Kuverein Crystal race however this did not deter the racers and we had eight pairs. Due to the heavy snow we decided to run a slightly different race for safety reasons and the racers had to get as close as possible to 10 minutes for their total time down the course from Bumps to Marys. The winners, Helen Whittet and John Pailthorpe passed the finish line holding hands at 9 minutes 53 seconds and 19th of a second by the time their handicap was added the total time was 10 minutes and 19th of a second. Everyone enjoyed a hearty lunch at Marys after the race.
We hope a few members will support the five DHO teams on the weekend of 14/15 March in Murren at the Amateur Inter-Club Championships.
The Railway cup date is set for Wednesday 25 March - somthing to look forward to and of course we still have a few other races to come; the Odling Cup on 26 March and the Cova cup the date is still to be decided however it will be sometime during the week commencing 4 April.

Sheridan's Report - 1st March 2009
The week started off with lots of heavy snow and poor visibility however it kept the crowds down on the pistes which was good. Although all the UK schools had gone back the Dutch and Belgiums were on half term so the resort was full still. Wednesday was the first nice day with glorious sunshine all day. Richard Lovell this week's DHO rep joined the mountain guide off piste day out. Conditions were very good as about 45 cms of new snow had fallen at the beginning of the week. A few changes in the new room the last of the trophy cabinets was filled with cups and a couple of other pictures were put up on the wall. It feels much more like home to the DHO now.
Things coming up are the Kurverein Crystal pairs handicap race on Thursday 5 March. The DHO has got together thanks to Liz Moore five teams for the Amateur Inter-Club Championships in Murren on 14 and 15 March. This is the second year this event has been held. The Kandahar are hosting it again this year, next year it moves to Italy and the season after (2010/2011) the DHO will be hosting the event in Wengen.
Jeremy Howard is getting the team together for next year's Inferno race. If you are keen to join the DHO team please contact Jeremy in Rocks bar in Wengen or contact Sheridan.
The coming week should be a lot quieter on the pistes as all the schools have gone back. The forcast is very mixed with sun and cloud and a bit of snow and pretty warm too.
Sheridan's Report - 22nd February 2009
Half term week started off in glorious sunshine on sunday followed by heavy snowfalls on and off over the next few days. Wengen was busy with lots of families enjoying the great snow, the best snow Wengen has had for a long time.
On Thursday the weather was kind to us for the Polytechnic race and the sun shone all day. Some DHO members joined the Skiclub mountain guide day and made fresh tracks in the deep snow. They even did the famous "White hare" off piste descent which starts with a tricky climb first to access the great powder. They went right down to Grund.
The week finished on a high with a mixed day weather wise - clouds to begin with, some sun and then the clouds again. Richard took a small group over to First for their last day and Sheridan skied in Wengen.
A little more activity in the new premises - finally broadband was installed, two new storage cupboards arrived and another trophy cabinet. Anyone who was here at the beginning of the year will not recognise the new room; it is really starting to feel like home. We are even open in the mornings for non skiers to pop in for coffee and a chat.

Sheridan's Report - 14th February 2009
DHO week proved to be a very busy one. The weather was very mixed however despite the fohn wind both the Lucy Dicker and Macmillan cup race were run. We had 42 entrants for the Lucy Dicker dual slalom run on Tuesday evening. Conditions were good and both the courses were pretty fast. Fun was had by all and the overall winner was Leo Flindall who beat Jonathan Latimer in the final. Jonathan beat Goregina Perrott in the quarter finals. Leo got a bye due to the odd numbers on the course.
Luckily the wind only affected the top of the mountains on Thursday so we were able to hold the Macmillan cup race afterall there were 44 racers of all ages who set off at 12.30 racing down to the finish by the Aspen restaurant. Record numbers of members attended the prize giving in the new premisis, over 70 people filled the room. Paul and Sheridan did have a back up plan up their sleeves just in case the weather was not kind on Thursday.
The week commencing 9 February started off with some sun and cloud followed by the ninth fohn wind of the season. Then it snowed and it snowed. Some 25 cm of new snow fell and the sun came out on Friday to make an excellent last day for many members. Some even venured into the deep stuff.
We ran a slightly unusual Andy Capp race on Thursday 12 February, with six pairs racing.
Everyone meet at Grindelwaldblick for lunch, and the teams were sent off by Richard and Sheridan at 13.20. Each pair had to start from the restaurant get into their skis and ski to Wengen via inner Wengen. They were given a couple of tasks to do the first being to check out the price of Cafe Fertig at Mary's cafe (the answer is seven francs) the other task after leaving Mary's was to go to the bakery in Wengen and buy a doughnut to bring to the finish intact. The finish was inside the Brandegg restaurant. The clever winners decided it would be quicker to take the Mannlichen cable car and trek over to the other side. Conditions were very tricky as it was snowing hard with very poor visability. Two racers found themselves stuck in deep snow shortly after the start. Fortunately they were resuced from the deep stuff! Firstly Peter rescued Alan then Peter got stuck himself and Alan stopped to rescue him. The Andy Capp plate was won by Roger Scoones and Nicholas Taylor. No doubt the late Mike Loveday who donated the cup would have been proud of them.

Sheridan's Report - 5th January 2009
The season started off well with lots of snow that sadly blew away, however it was quickly replenished before Christmas with new snow. Lots of fun was had by all over the busy Christmas and New Year holidays. It was magical on New Years Eve when the heavens opened and it snowed from around 7pm followed by a bright blue sky powder day on New Years day. What better way to start of the New Year?
We had 31 entrants for the Coggins and Eagles "David Strage slalom race" on New Years Eve and 5 teams for the treasure hunt on the 2nd January.
Heinz Cup. 2nd January 2009. Treasure Hunt, Whole Area, conditions good, some soft and hard pistes after new snow on 31 December.
