MEMBERS EVENTS - 2009/10 RESULTS & SHERIDAN'S REPORTS

30th March 2010. Touring, and the Donators race.

Monday was the start of Max's touring week Sheridan looked after them for the first couple of days. They had a ski around to warm up first then did a bit of skinning followed by some practice searching for buried avalanche transievers. On tuesday they headed over to Grindelwald and found some spring snow. There had been quite a lot of avalanches very close to the piste so the group went over to look at a recent avalanche, looked at its texture and walked on it to see how it felt. There were some pretty big bolders of snow as seen in the photo with Sean standing in it. On Wednesday they had a great day heliskiing with a guide and lunch at Blatten.

The weather stayed mostly sunny and warm and the pistes have held up quite well all things considered. Sadly the Odling cup race on Thursday had to be cancelled due to lack of numbers entered. We did get a little top up of snow at the end of the week which freshened up the pistes and made the Lauberhorn race course a lot better for the Donators race on Saturday 27 March. The DHO did rather well having 15 poeple entered under the various age categories. Ed Killwick was third in his age category with a time of 48.51 and had the fastest time out of all the DHO racers.

Alexandra Moore was fourth in her age category with a time of 49.92 and had the fastest time of DHO female entrants and the second fastest time out of all the DHO racers. Tony Davis was third in his age category with a time of 1.03.61. Sally Ireland won her age category with a time of 54.67 and Lizzie Davis was third in the same age category with a time of 1.02.27. Margarite Nice was second in her age category with a time of 55.89. Well done everyone. After a busy day racing on Saturday a few DHO members took things more gently on Sunday and enjoyed a ski before having lunch at Mary's cafe renouned for its quails.

Monday was a good day for skiing early with a light dusting of new snow however by lunchtime it was time to stop as the snow became very slushy. Happy Easter everyone.

22nd March 2010. Spring is coming.

We were all very pleased to see some new snow on Tuesday and enjoyed skiing on the smooth pistes which had a small cover of fresh snow on them. Tom Walduck celebrated his 67th birthday in the club room on Tuesday evening and very generouly provided champagne, wine and beer for all who came along. Many locals were invited to join in, and Tom's wife Sarah and a few others prepared some delicious canapes.

On Wednesday the weather got very warm - we had a great day out in Murren, the conditions were great. We are all beginning to look very healthy now the sun is very strong. High factor sun protection is required!

Thursday was another warm sunny day so we took advantage of the good visibilty and headed over to First for the day. There was some great spring snow conditions. The pistes became very soft so we decided to have a late lunch and pack up afterwards. This proved to be a wise decision. Friday was sunny and warm again many enjoyed a last days skiing.

Sadly the weather was not so kind on saturday for those who were lucky enough to have another weeks skiing. It was cloudy then the sun came out for a short while and it rained later on. The pistes were very heavy and wet. Early on Sunday morning it rained quite heavily and skiing was postponed till 11.30am. A few of us went to church and enjoyed Roger Scoones service the DHO even got a mention in his sermon and he managed to slip in that he had won the Kuverein Crystal race too. Around 12.30 the sun came out and a few of us headed up the Mannlichen cable car for some skiing. After a few runs on very soft empty pistes most went back to Wengen for late lunch and early showers.

More warm weather is forcast for most of the week and maybe some snow on Friday and Saturday. Have a great week, Sheridan

15th March 2010. Birthday & Fondue.

The week started off well with new snow and some sunshine. On Sunday evening Brian Pette had a birthday celebration in the DHO club room, about 65 members helped him celebrate. Brian very generously provided all the drinks that evening. The rest of the week was busy in the club room and we had quite a few members out skiing enjoying the sunshine and new snow.

Happy Birthday Brian!

Sarah Hoyle organised a fondue evening on Wednesday at the Bernerhof. 23 members joined in, it was a very enjoyable evening. On Thursday we ran the Kuverein Crystal race on bumps down to Mary's nine paris signed up for the race. Conditions were a lot better than last season and we were able to run a proper race and the fastest pair were Roger Scoones and Sarah Hirst - congratulations to them both. Sadly Phippe Scholl from the Tourist office was unable to attend the prize giving to award the crystal.

We recieved some very sad news that John Waghorn very sadly passed away on Saturday 13 March. Our thoughts are with his wife Linnet and his son Will at this time and we send them our condolences. John had not been in the best of health for sometime and he did say when he was in Wengen this season that he thought it was going to be his last visit.

10th March 2010. Inter-club races in Cortina.

The week started off warm and got colder as the week went on which was great as it snowed all day on Friday and Saturday. This might have been rain had the tempreature not dropped so rapidly. The snow was much needed as it was disappearing rapidly due to the very warm weather it was like April.

On Thursday the DHO team headed off early in the morning to Cortina for the 3rd Amateur Inter-Club team championships hosted this year by Sci 18 (Diciotto Ski Club) in Italy. It was a long drive however we all arrived in time to enjoy the welcome party sponsored by Sci 18 in their palatial Club House. The weather was kind to us and although it was very cold on Friday morning for the Super G the sun shone. All four DHO teams got down with no injuries and Ed Robinson was our star he got the 3rd fastest time in the Super G 1.12.29 only beaten by two local Italian lads.

Grace McCutcheon 1.27.36 and Mary Day 1.26.21 did very well too. Everyone enjoyed some free skiing in the afternoon before heading back to the Hotel. A group of us headed into Cortina to join the Italians parading up and down the main drag the Via Roma. We had fun fur coat spotting and sipping prosecco in the local bars. Richard (Ricardo) threatened to parade in the main street in his catsuit!! Needless to say we stopped him!! The teams set out bright and early on Saturday to Cinque Torre for the Giant Slalom race again the weather was kind and the sun shone. Sadly there were two italians injured one before the race and one during the race. We received news of them in the evening and both were said to be ok. The afternoon was spent free skiing this time in one of the other Ski areas of Cortina.

We all got dressed up for the prize giving and farewell dinner at the Sci 18 Club House which was about 15 minutes drive from the Hotel and drove there in the 17 seater minibus we had hired. It was great fun and our over 60s mens team won bronze medals, congratulations to Tony Davis, Richard Hackett, Robert Goodwin and Martin West. Our over 60s ladies team won silver medals, congratulations Lizzie Davis, Sally Ireland and Liz Moore.

We returned to Wengen on Sunday afternoon and our medalists made it to office hour to show off their medals. We were very pleased to see the new snow in Wengen too.

Thanks go to Liz Moore for organising the DHO teams again this year.

Next season we will be hosting the event in Wengen the dates are 4 to 6 March with some race training in the week leading up to it week commencing 28 February. More details to follow. We will be looking to enter at least two teams in each age category male and females aged 18 to 45, 46 to 59 and over 60s and of course we will need some gatekeepers too.

28th February 2010. Mixed weather.

Sunday 21 February was extremely busy with all the weekenders up and the tailend of half term holiday makers in Wengen still. The weather was glorious - clear skies and cold. The pistes were in great condition having been topped up with the fresh snow that fell on Friday. Most of the week was sunny and warm in the morning and cloudy in the afternoon and we got a little rain which was snow higher up on Tuesday and about 4cms in the village and 8cms at the top very early on Friday morning. It soon stopped and we had a great days skiing lower down on Friday in the Innner Wengen area. The piste bashers had not been out so it was lovely fresh snow on a hard piste. Alastair Drew thought his run down to Inner Wengen as he was the first one making his own fresh tracks was worth £1000 - the rest of the group had taken the route down via DHO gap and telegraph fields and enjoyed that immensely too. I took Alastair down the red run to Inner Wengen after having done the black and he confessed that in all the time he had been coming to Wengen he had never been down that run before. We left the lower runs and took the train up from Allmend to Scheidegg but soon moved away as it was very windy up there. It was windy for the rest of the day sadly blowing the new snow away. However good skiing was had on Saturday despite the wind the staff looking after the pistes had done a great job over night grooming them.

We wish all the DHO teams heading for Cortina next Thursday for the 3rd Amateur Inter Club team championships lots of luck. Dont forget we will be hosting this next season in Wengen dates are 4 to 6 March. We will be looking for racers male/female under 45, male/female over 45 and male/female over 60 years old and gatekeepers too.
Happy skiing

21st February 2010. A new door for the Club Room.

A splendid new door for our club room.

18th February 2010. Half-term week.

The weather was very kind for all the families on half term holidays this week. Sunshine almost every day. It was very cold at the beginning of the week and gradually got warmer as the week went on. The queues were only bad at the beginning of the day and after that, once you were out of the village it wasnt so bad.

A few problems with the transport this week - a train got stuck coming up from Grindelwald on Tuesday which caused chaos at Grund and Grindelwald stations and at the bottom of the Mannlichen gondola for a couple of hours. Luckily the DHO ski groups had chosen to go to Murren that day so avoided all of this. Sadly we weren't so lucky on Wednesday; both DHO ski groups got stuck on the train to Scheidegg which broke down just below Wengenalp. After a 40 minute wait another train came from Scheidegg to the rescue and we all got off the broken down train and hopped on the replacement one. Skiing continued as normal after that however there was a hugh queue at the Mannlichen cable car while the broken down train was cleared from the line.

Thursday was the best day of the week with bright sunshine and warm tempreatures, excellent conditions for the three races being held that day. Twenty five coggins raced on the bumps piste at 1pm and then 10 Eagles and 14 Adults raced on the Lauberhorn race course at 3pm - a delayed start to allow parents to watch their children race and then take part in the Polytechnic cup race afterwards.

Lots of fun was had by all and plenty of adrenaline around as the racers left the Lauberhorn start hut. Sadly 3 racers fell and missed a gate quite near the end of the GS course so there were a few dented prides as all the spectators could see their falls. No harm done - all arrived safely at the bottom of the course.

Prize giving was a real buzz; over fifty people crowed the new DHO club room. Many photos were taken, especially on the new podium! A journalist Ferdinand from the Berner Oberlander was present to take some photos for his article in the local paper.

The overall winner of the Coggins mid term cup was Elizabeth Gay, the overall winner of the Eagles Snoggins cup was Tom Little and the overall winner of the Polytechnic cup was Stephen Penrose.

Lets hope for some more snow now ready for next week.

Sheridan.

14th February 2010. News, and Andy Capp.

After a very hectic DHO week it was great to have a slightly quieter week. Helen Gloster, the DHO rep went home on Saturday along with many other DHO members who had been out especially for DHO week and Johhny Webster's memorial. Richard Lovell arrived on Saturday to take over from Helen. He was hoping for a cheeky ski before Sunday, but due to fog at Bern he only got one run in on the Lauberhorn, just making the last lift at 4.29pm. The sun came out on Sunday and conditions were excellent. Although it was forcast to snow most of the week the sun did come out quite a lot and it was very cold so this kept the new snow in good order.

One group went to Grindelwald on Tuesday and the other group went over to Murren. The slopes were not to busy although some school holidays had already begun.

Four teams entered the Andy Capp quiz race; much studying of the questions took part before they all set off for the day. The overall winners were Lizzie Davis and Helen Whittet - everyone enjoyed the day.

The club room is going from strenght to strength, many more members are using it. The least number we have had in the evening for office hour has been 20 with an average of 45 a night. It is really great to see so many enjoying the new room. More bookshelves have been installed by Freddie Whitelaw and they are almost full - dont forget to swap your book for another one. Many more members are bringing in their newspapers, thank you, allowing some of us to catch up on what is happening in the world.

Bob and Rachel are overrun with children this week both for Coggins and Eagles reaching record numbers.

Things to look forward to are the Polytechnic race this Thursday 18 February and the Amateur Inter-Club Championships in Cortina from 4 to 7 March. If you fancy racing in one of the DHO teams we still have two spots available for an over 45 years old female and male. For more information please contact Liz Moore liblabmoore@yahoo.co.uk, it will be a fun event.

Happy Valentines day and Happy skiing Sheridan

8th February 2010. DHO Race week.

Well DHO race week kicked off with an unusual start with an Art Exhibition in the DHO club room. Some 25 watercolour paintings of Wengen and the surrounding area by Rupert Head were displayed, firstly for a private viewing in the club room which continued into office hour. About one hundred and twenty people came to view the paintings. Roughly a third were sold on the first evening - only four remain unsold.

On Monday evening after dinner Steven Davies gave talk and slide show of his trip to Baffin Island in he club room. Approximately fifty people attended some of whom had sponsored Steven who was raising money for Epilepsy. He is off on another adventure this time to the North Pole - we wish him luck.

Fourteen people entered the Open Race; a giant slalom held on the Lauberhorn on Tuesday 2 February. It was combination of two runs, the overall winner and the fastest man was Alex Maienfisch from Bern and the fastest lady was Sheridan Killwick. Thanks to Liz Moore, Ingie Christophersen and Heinz Von Allmen for organising the race and the gate keepers.

On Tuesday evening forty-four DHO members entered the Lucy Dicker knock-out dual slalom. Fun was had by all,it was very competitive and entertaining to watch too. The overall winner was Alex Maienfisch and in a very close second was Edward Robinson. The last remaining lady in the knock out was Ingie who got through to the quarter finals - well done. Thanks go to Ercole, Christian and Sean for setting up the course and to Helen, Lizzie and Sean who helped Sheridan run the race.

After a great days skiing the drinks party and Open race prize giving was held at the Falken Hotel. On the same day a memorial service was held in the English Church for the late Johhny Webster, followed by drinks in the club room.

Thursday was the big day; forty-one members from 18 years old to 79 years old entered the Mcmillan cup race - a mass start from Tschuggen by the start hut for the ladies downhill race finishing just above Aspen restaurant. Thanks go to all who helped at the start, the finish and along the course - too many to mention individually. Thanks also to Uli Fruttiger from the SOS and his team without whom we could not run this race.
Prize giving was in the club room at 5.30pm for both the Lucy Dicker and the McMillan cup races.

Later that evening over a hundred poeple attended the pre dinner champagne reception in the club room very generously sponspored by CMH Heliskiing Canada. All dressed up in their glad rags the party goers all floated up to the Hotel Regina Wengen for the 85th Anniversary dinner dance. Special thanks go to Tony Davis, Freddie Whitelaw, Gilda Prest, Liz Moore, Julia Bramah, Eden Davies, Sarah Hoyle, Susie Davies, Val Rowe, Helen Whittet, Paul Flindall, Sean McCarthy, Helen Gloster and Martin West for their help. Also to Guido and Ariane Meyer and thier staff who put on a splendid event for us. Not fogetting of course John the DJ who had us all dancing the night away till one o'clock. I believe there was a group of hard core drinkers who carried on drinking in the bar till the early hours.

After all that excitement Friday was back to a normal day with two DHO ski groups out on the slopes.

It was a very noisy, jolly offfice hour with most talking of the partying from the night before and saying their farwells. I am sure many will take home with them good memories from this week.

Fresh snow on Friday afternoon has set us up for the start of the school holidays.

Happy Skiing Sheridan.

The weather was very mixed for Railway cup week some sun and lots of snow. Lots of members were out in Wengen this week we had about 60 to 70 visiting the club room most nights. It was lovely weather the day before the Railway cup race and we were all hoping that the forcast was wrong, however it was snowing heavily all day on Thursday as predicted. This did not deter twenty-four DHO members from doning their race bibs in the Tipi at Kleine Scheidegg before skiing to the new Eigernorwand chairlift. At the top of the chair we all had to make our way to the start of the race course which was covered in deep snow. Chrisoph Egger and Urs Kessler had laid on a great Giant Slalom course and both participated in the race. Heinz Von Allmen was not silly - he was sitting inside a piste basher keeping warm and dry at the bottom of the race course taking down everyone's times. Fourty DHO members enjoyed a lovely lunch in the Champian's room at the restaruant at Kleine Scheidegg after the race hosted by the Jungfraubahnen. Our thanks go to Urs and Christoph for a great Railway cup event.

On Friday evening after dinner we had our first ever Swiss wine tasting evening in the new club room. Thirty-six DHO wannabe wine experts came along for what proved to be a fun evening. We kicked off with some champagne and sparkling wine very kindly donated by Tony Davis followed by several white wines and then several red wines. Philip Hill very kindly donated some of the wine, the rest was sourced by Tony Davis. Dayne Hobbs, Wine and Spirit Eductation Trust diploma holder took us through the wines. Ian Perkins gave a brief talk on corks. Two bottles of champange were donated by Sheridan and Sean and raffled to raise money for 'Get Kids Going'. The evening was a great sucess. Thanks go to all who helped out.

On Saturday the club room was rented out for the second season to Liz Moore for the prize giving for the International School races. About a hundred children attended

26th January 2010. Inferno weekend.

The snow has held up very well all things considered. Most of last week was sunny except we got a small top up of snow over night on Wednesday 20th, which was great. We had 5cms of new snow in the village and 10cms of new snow at the top - just enough to freshen up the pistes. The drinks party was held at the Wengenerhof Hotel and was the busiest to date; about 60 people came along. Giovanni and Enzo were pleased to see so many members and they were very welcoming to us as usual.

The DHO inferno race team were in town and could be spotted by their long skis and many trips over to Murren to check out the course. I am sure they must have inspected every snow flake by the end of the week. All the team did very well and they all got to the finish ok too. Many members went over to Murren to support the team and Sheridan was interviewed on Swiss TV; she managed to slip in that she was there to cheer on the Downhill Only Club racers. She was also asked why she was not racing? She replied "Oh I have done the Inferno and got a bronze medal and didnt feel the need to do it again." (Far to scary!!)

Will Wells was our champian racer he arrived late Friday evening (yes the night before the race) hired some race skis early Saturday morning and without the advantage of inspecting the course he was the fastest in the DHO team with a time of 10.56.

The DHO race team started their celebrations on Saturday evening with Champagne at the Falken Hotel followed by dinner at Da Sina's. There were a few sore heads the next day.

It was sunny again on Sunday and mixed on Monday. However it is snowing again today and forcast to be sunny on Wednesday. Things to look forward to are the Railway cup on Thursday 28 January and a Swiss wine tasting on Friday evening.

Then next week is the really busy week with the Open race on Tuesday followed by the Lucy Dicker night slalom. Then the race of the week the McMillan cup on Thursday 4 February. Rumour has it last years winner Leo Flindall will be out to defend his title again.

85th Anniversary celebrations will be held at the Regina Hotel. We will kick off with a champagne reception in our club room and then make our way up to the Regina Hotel.

Happy skiing,
Sheridan

16th January 2010. Lauberhorn Races.

Great week skiing and snowboarding here in Wengen. Good weather most of the week and extremely uncrowed pistes. Monday and Tuesday were sunny so we took advantage and took a group over to Grindelwald on Tuesday. It snowed on Wednesday which freshened up the pistes for Thursday when the sun shone again and we skied over in Murren. Some of us got some fresh tracks in over in Murren whilst others enjoyed the uncrowed pistes.

The opening of the Lauberhorn race was held on the ice rink which at the moment is unrecognisable with all the food and beer tents and the grand stage on it.

Sandy and Caroline did a demon job running the bar on Thursday evening.

Friday saw the first snowboarder of the season, Chris the current chaplain, join the DHO for the day. Yes you read that correctly a snowboarding vicar!! He is very nice, young and handsome and has caused quite a stir in the village.

Ness the present DHO rep is seen here on the podium with her gold medal for winning the alternative Lauberhorn race.

Saturday was the big day the 80th Lauberhorn race, with 25% more visitors than last year coming to Wengen to watch the race it took some 2 hours to get up from Lauterbrunnen by train some gave up and walked up. Sheridan's claim to fame was getting Carlo Janka's autograph and a photo, the winner of the Lauberhorn race. In second place was Manuel Osborne-Paradis and third was Marco Buechel. Aslo she managed to get a photo with Graham Bell in the background.

Fascinating Video about televising the Lauberhorn race.

11th January 2010. From one extreme to another.

Christmas and New Year was very busy in Wengen despite the snow conditions - everyone seemed to have a good time. We had very mixed conditions from one extreme to another freezing cold to very warm. Good powder to hard packed icy slopes - currently they are in pretty good condition up high and a bit icy on the lower slopes.

Ingie was in Wengen Christmas week with the Racing and Training group who all enjoyed themselves. Sadly for them their races in in Austria were cancelled so they returned to the UK a bit earlier than expected.

We had a good turn out for the Heinz cup treasure hunt on New Year's Eve, six teams entered. Many of them spent some time over coffee deciding which route they would take before heading off for the day. Most teams returned almost out of breath at 16.30 - some even asked if they could have some more time!

Bob had a good turn out for his Coggins and Eagles race too. The club room was full of proud parents at prize giving.

The village is building itself up for the Lauberhorn race at the end of this week. The army have been busy errecting all the stands and TV's screens in preperation for the races. The teams start to arrive today Monday 11 January a little earlier than usual as they are worried about the weather later in the week and getting a practice run in.

Other things to look forward to are the Railway cup on Thursday 28 January, Baffin Island talk on Monday 1 February, a Giant slalom open race on Tuesday 2 February, the Lucy Dicker night dual slalom race on Tuesday 2 February, the Mcmillan cup race on Thursday 4 February followed by our 85th Anniversary dinner at the Hotel Regina at 20.30. Should be a good night. Tickets are selling fast so if you havent already booked please do as soon as possible email Sarah Hoyle hon.sec@downhillonly.com

I think there maybe more snow in some parts of England than there is in Wengen at the moment. Today is a glorious sunny day snow is forcast for Wednesday this week.

Life's little essentials on their way to Wengernalp!

21st December 2009. Dressing up for Christmas.

It is all go in Wengen; after a few very cold days it warmed up today and was only minus 4 instead of minus 18. We can ski to the village on the Wengen side but not to Grindelwald yet. More snow is forecast in the next few days and warmer tempreatures - hopefully not too warm or it will rain again.

We opened the club room on Sunday to members and managed to get the new lights in the cabinets, the new cartwheel ceiling lights and the christmas tree sorted in time for the offical opening. Sadly we will have to wait till mid January for the new doors and the balcony railings.

We have already made two new members and hope that many more will join this winter season. The first drinks party of the season is at the Falken Hotel on 22 December and the first race of the season is on 31 December - it will be a treasure hunt for pairs or teams to take part.

We are looking forward to a great ski season. Happy Christmas and New Year to all.
