Mürren Inferno

Inferno 2016 Team

The Mürren Inferno takes place every January, and naturally the DHO sends a team across the valley to represent the club. Find out more about the race on the official Inferno site here.

The 75th International Inferno Race takes place on 17th to 20st January 2018.  The Inferno race was held for the first time on 29th January 1928.  Today it is the oldest and longest amateur downhill race in the world.  The race runs from the top of the Schilthorn to the finish at Lauterbrunnen (snow conditions permitting).  The length of the course is 14.9 km with a drop in altitude of 2770 m. The race is contested by 1800 entrants in teams from all over the world.

Alison Hinde is the DHO team captain and Daniel Grimes the vice-captain.  Every year the DHO enters a team and members interested in racing should complete the Inferno application form that can be downloaded from below and  emailed to Inferno@downhillonly.com

or posted to Don McCutchan at

17 Ferring St

Entrance forms need to be received by the end of July 2017 and payment of £60 for the Downhill race or £90 for those doing the combination races should be paid into the DHO bank account details listed below:-

Sort code: 16 00 38
Account number: 00173514

Entrance forms will not be submitted without payment.
We do allow people who pay to enter get a race bib and change their mind, a refund, as invariably there is someone else who wants the race entry. So we do refund. We also refund if the entry application is rejected.

In 2018 the Inferno Downhill will be run on Saturday 20st January, the combination races start on Wednesday 17th with the Cross Country and the Giant Slalom on Thursday 18th.

The DHO will be informed of the number of successful entrants at the end of October and applicants will be notified in early November.  For those who are unsuccessful in the first ballot, we will apply again in the second round for entry places and notify members as soon as possible.
