Viktor Gertsch 11th May 1942 – 26th November 2016
Many DHO members will already have heard that our Hon President, Viktor Gertsch, died on Saturday 26th November, aged 74. Not only was Viktor our Hon President, but, importantly, he was the President of the Organising Committee of the Lauberhorn Races from 1970 until 2014 when he retired. He was then asked to become the Hon President of the Lauberhorn. He followed directly in the footsteps of his father Ernst Gertsch who had started the Lauberhorn in 1930. This was a Gertsch dynasty of some 85 years, a quite unprecedented occurrence in world skiing. The Lauberhorn remains the largest single sporting occasion that occurs in Switzerland each year, thanks in no small part to Viktor’s efforts.
It was Viktor’s express wish that his funeral should be a private family service and this has now taken place There will, however, be a major commemoration and celebration of his life which will be held in Interlaken on Tuesday 13th December at 1400hrs at the Congress Centre Kursaal, Interlaken, Strandbadstrasse 44, 3800 Interlaken. All are welcome, but public transport is strongly recommended as well over 2,000 people are expected and car parking spaces are very limited. It is requested that no photographs are taken at the ceremony. The DHO has been asked to participate so Max Davies is going out to do a short “Eulogy”
Over many years we have greatly valued Viktor’s unstinting help to the DHO and his friendship to us all. On behalf of the entire membership, we send our deepest sympathy to his widow Heidi Gertsch- Berger and his son Philipp and wife Marianne, with their son Niklas, together with the remainder of the extended Gertsch family.
